Promote quality learning for special children leveraging digital technologies

The Challenge:

According to Census 2011, learners with disabilities constitute a population of about 40 lakh in the age group of 5-19 years in India. When it comes to education, due to the progress in the IT industry, digital technologies are easily accessible and widespread which offers children with special needs (CWSN) new opportunities. However, technology-based education is not a reality for all CWSNs, especially ones in rural areas who are without devices, connectivity, or even the means to afford them. Access to technology can assist them in getting better educational, socio-cultural, and economic opportunities.

The Solution:

Cognizant Foundation places emphasis on improving the quality of education for all students, including CWSN. Inclusive education for CWSN has been one of the major interventions in the Foundation’s Digital and STEM learning focus under education. Since its inception, the Foundation has been supporting projects that create a positive attitude and awareness about the nature and needs of CWSN.

The Foundation has partnered with Worth Trust, Katpadi, CBM India Trust, Bengaluru, Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deafblind, Mumbai, Rotary club of Chennai Kilpauk, Chennai and Bangalore speech and hearing Trust, Bengaluru to provide support for various components which include aids, assistive devices, smart classroom setup, digitization of instructional materials, curriculum adaptation and training of special educators.
