Cyclone Amphan relief

Amphan, ‘the very severe’ cyclone storm made landfall in Sunderbans delta in May 2020. Coastal areas of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Midnapur and Kolkata city were the districts most severely affected. Amphan unleashed copious rain, windstorm, destroyed houses, uprooted trees, plunged corps, killed livestock, submerged tube-wells and uprooted power distribution poles. Water sources were contaminated with the debris of dead animals and decayed trees. Amphan devastated the lives of people amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cognizant Foundation, in partnership with CBM India, provided immediate relief support to vulnerable Amphan cyclone-affected families in two districts of West Bengal (North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas). The project benefitted and supported 4120 households of Nyzam and Hingolganj blocks of North & South Parganas, with dry ration kits, mosquito nets, and solar lamps; nursing mothers/pregnant women and infants/children with nutritious food kits; households with cooking utensils; and women with sanitary napkins. The project reached 400+ people with disabilities with immediate relief and referrals for other rehabilitation services. This project was implemented complying COVID-19 protocols and value-added services were provided, which included medical camps and referrals to hospitals.
